Ecovillages – a solution to our many climate and resource problems?

•23 december 2009 • Kommentera

On one of my last days in Denmark, in the wake of a meaningless deal at COP-15, I went to visit ’The Self-sustaining village’ (or Den selvforsynende landsby), an eco-village a couple of hours train ride out of Copenhagen. As I mentioned in my post on agricultural alternatives, eco-villages have the potential of freeing us of being so dependent on the individualistic, consumerist and commodified system in the cities. They have the potential of letting us learn how to live together on the land again in a genuinely more sustainable way, which is especially important given the climate crisis and resource shortages that we face. Rather than repeat myself, if you want to read more about why cities are completely unsustainable and why we need to move back onto the land, have a look at this article and this one.

Jack Daw’s COP15: Reclaiming Power? Report of the 16th December climate justice protests

•17 december 2009 • Kommentera

After writing such a cynical post about the ‘Don’t Buy the Lie’ anti-corporate protests on the 11th December I thought I’d give protests one more try at COP-15. I decided to go to the ‘Reclaim Power – pushing for climate justice’ protest as this is what everything was supposed to building up to. I went to action training and some planning meetings for the protest beforehand and the energy at the these meet-ups was ecstatic. We were cheering and howling and full of energy. We were determined to get in to the Bella center and have our voices heard.

The police had been successful at splitting and disbanding protests all week and we had many ideas of how to avoid the police. The plan to split up the police was for there to be several different blocks all going to the Bella Center at the same time where the politicians were meeting. The plan was for people to get over the fences and into the Bella Center grounds to hold ‘peoples’ assemblies’ with delegates and NGOs who would walk out of the Center. The plan was to show those inside that we can reclaim the power and make decisions in a non-hierarchical and horizontal way.

Jack Daw’s COP15: Inspiring alternatives at COP-15 about food sovereignty and access to land

•15 december 2009 • 2 kommentarer

Instead of just being cynical in my reports, I also wanted to write about some of the inspiring alternatives at Copenhagen.

For me, one of the most fundamental things we have to do is change how we grow, distribute and control food. Food is central to our lives and genuine alternatives to the current destructive system need to start with it. If we are faced with severe climate disasters or resource shortages in the future– such as oil – food shortages will be one of the first and biggest problems that we would face. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, around 3 million people starved to death after significant resource shortages happened in North Korea. Therefore it is crucial that we prepare for resource shortages, especially given that we know that global peak oil is fast approaching (if we haven’t reached it already), if we are not to face a similar catastrophe. Agriculture is often thought of as an activity of the past but it will have to be an activity of the future for much more people if we are to live without industrial agriculture.

There are many reasons why we need to shift away from industrial agriculture, such as its dependence on fossil fuels, the vast carbon emissions and other pollution it produces and its destruction of soil fertility. Rather than repeat the many critiques of industrial agriculture and the reasons why we have to do something about it, I’d recommend reading ‘Small scale sustainable farmers are cooling down the earth’ by Via Campesina and the ‘Manifesto on climate change and the future of food security’ by The International Commission on the Future of Food.

Jack Daw’s COP15: Our Climate, Not Your Business

•11 december 2009 • 1 kommentar

After a group meeting in the morning we met at 10am at Nytorv for the anti-corporate ‘Don’t Buy the Lie’ protest. While we were milling around, not knowing what to do or where to go, some people went around handing out a map of corporate targets across the city. The plan was to go between the targets and for us to split into four groups: a noise brigade who’d make as much noise as possible, a visual group with banners and who’d do graffiti, an inside ruckus group who’d go inside targets and disrupt business and an outside ruckus group to hold the space outside of the targets.

A drum beat starts and we come around the street band, dancing and pumping ourselves up for whatever is going to happen. Someone passes by whispering in our ears that we’re going to number 3 target. We’re already surrounded by the police and many cameras. I feel a wave of energy come through me as the drum beat gets louder and faster. I just want to take down corporations but know this isn’t the place or the time.

Jack Daw’s COP15: Getting to Copenhagen, Indigenous Rights and a post oil Cuba?

•10 december 2009 • 1 kommentar

After a sleepless but free nights travel to Copenhagen I ended up at Klimaforum in the DGI-BYEN complex. The people at the info point were useless, not wanting to help me find where the free accommodation was. They are part of a less radical faction of climate activists and don’t seem to want anything to do with those who are more radical even though they are supposed to be ”the alternative summit.” Corporate environmental propaganda and talks are some of what fills their programme. They just told me that one of the free places – Ragnhildsgade – had been raided by the police the night before!

I ended up at Teglholmen, after asking many people, to find a large warehouse with pallets laid out to sleep on. It’s a well organised and collectively run space with a peoples kitchen to feed us and rotas for us all to volunteer for different responsibilities. They told me that they had been raided by the police a few days before, put everyone in handcuffs and held them in one room while they think the police bugged the place with microphones and cameras. The police repression feels like it could get worse here.
